Ivan Allen, Jr. was mayor of Atlanta from 1962-1970 during the civil rights movement. He launched a new “Forward Atlanta” program during this time and promoted economic growth and as the city began to see economic growth it became apparent that transportation was in great need of improvement . During Allen’s terms in office, business erected many of the great architectural works that dot the Atlanta skyline and the states interstate system began to take shape.
