In 2011, the Hawks celebrated their 43rd season in Atlanta. The professional basketball team arrived in Atlanta in 1968 after short stays in Milwaukee and St. Louis. The arrival of the National Basketball Association and other nationally recognized sports teams led to economic growth in Atlanta by creating new industries in the forms of tourism and hotels.
